Tanja Šumar

Tanja is a seasoned expert in dispute resolution, with a special focus on arbitration. Before joining Nikčević Kapor, she spent over 10 years as an attorney at one of Belgrade’s leading law firms. Throughout her career, Tanja has earned consistent recognition from top legal directories like Who’s Who Legal, Chambers & Partners, and Legal 500.
Her expertise is particularly strong in investor-state arbitration, where she has represented both investors and states in cases under ICSID, ICSID Additional Facility, and UNCITRAL rules. Over the past 12 years, Tanja has gained invaluable experience in this niche, handling high-stakes cases that often (and some already did) have global impact. Her experience in the field also allowed her the opportunity to influence state policy and future investment-treaty cases by taking part in drafting a model bilateral investment treaty for a client-State and attending inter-state negotiations of a specific bilateral investment treaty based on that model.
In addition to investor-state cases, Tanja has handled a wide range of high-profile commercial arbitrations, including those under ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, and other major arbitration frameworks. She’s worked on some of the region’s most complex disputes, requiring a deep understanding of both legal issues and the specific industries involved.
Tanja’s experience also extends to litigation, where she’s handled cases in areas like contract law, torts, recognition of foreign arbitral awards, employment and bankruptcy, as well as enforcement, administrative disputes, and constitutional court actions. She has a broad skillset, making her well-equipped to tackle even the toughest legal challenges.
She is fluent in English.
